Internationally renowned Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Inc. (MVVA) created this conceptual rendering for the Outer Harbor Park.  MVVA, a Landscape Architecture and Urban Design firm, has designed and constructed parks in Boston, Philadelphia and around the world, including both Brooklyn Bridge Park and Chelsea Cove at Hudson River Park in New York City. MVVA believes that parks are founded on the idea of the commons – democratic, inclusive open spaces, while promoting ecological, programmatic, experiential and social diversity.

The Outer Harbor Park concept was created in collaboration with Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper and with the input and recommendations of members of 20 leading organizations.  This park would feature innovative place-making elements that would enhance the quality of life of Western New Yorkers, by providing recreational opportunities for people to gather, celebrate, contemplate and engage in activities that promote well-being, health, community, and the environment. This vision includes features that allow visitors to:

  • Experience the natural beauty of Lake Erie, access to the water for sailing, boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, and fishing;
  • Experience incredible sunset views over water – this parcel of land is the only place in a Northeast major city where you can do this.;
  • Experience dedicated space for an outdoor amphitheater, restaurants, a promenade,and boat launches become a connecting link in over 50 miles of bikeways, pathways and waterways from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie.

The development of the Outer Harbor provides an opportunity to create a world class destination for cultural and eco tourism in our region.
